Control what each team member can do in your project.
Assign a role during invitation
- Go to Settings > Members
- Click + Invite
- Enter email and select a Role:
- Admin — Full project access
- Team Admin — Manage specific team(s)
- Member — Create and update work
- Viewer — View only
- Click Invite
Change someone’s role
- Go to Settings > Members
- Click the person to select
- Find their current Role
- Click to change it
- Select the new role
- The change takes effect immediately
Example role progressions
- New person — Viewer, then Member
- Promoted team lead — Member to Team Admin
- Project lead — Team Admin or Member to Admin
Assign team admin responsibility
- Go to Settings > Teams
- Click a team
- Click Assign Team Admin or select the team admin
- Choose the person
- They’re now responsible for that team
A person can be Team Admin for multiple teams.
Viewer → Member promotion
When someone is ready to contribute:
- Change their role from Viewer to Member
- They can now create and edit issues
- They still cannot delete or modify settings
Team Admin → Admin promotion
When someone needs full project control:
- Change their role from Team Admin to Admin
- They can now access all teams and modify settings
- They can invite members and manage the entire project
Restrictions
- Only Admins can change roles
- You cannot remove your own Admin role (to prevent lockout)
- A person must be a Member or higher to create work
Audit log
Who changed which roles? (if enabled):
See changes: “Admin user X promoted Y to Team Admin”
Go to Settings > Activity Log
