  • Create and edit issues

    Issues represent work items—tasks, bugs, stories, or any unit of work.

    Create an issue

    Quick create

    1. Click + Add Issue or + Create
    2. Type a title
    3. Press Enter

    The issue is created and appears in your backlog or current view.

    Detailed create

    1. Click + New Issue or + Create Issue
    2. Fill in:
      • Title (required)
      • Description (optional)
      • Priority (Low, Medium, High, Critical)
      • Assignee (who is responsible)
      • Team (which team)
      • Estimate (story points or hours, optional)
    3. Click Create

    Edit an issue

    1. Click the issue to open the detail panel
    2. Edit any field:
      • Title
      • Description
      • Status
      • Assignee
      • Priority
      • Estimate
      • Custom fields
    3. Click Save or press Enter

    Changes are saved immediately.

    Delete an issue

    1. Click the issue to open it
    2. Look for the Delete button or option
    3. Click Delete
    4. Click Confirm

    Deleted issues cannot be recovered.

  • Assign work and set ownership

    Assign issues to team members and set ownership.

    Assign an issue

    1. Click the issue to open it
    2. Find the Assignee field
    3. Click to select a team member
    4. Click Save

    An issue can be assigned to one person.

    Reassign an issue

    1. Click the issue
    2. Click the current assignee
    3. Select a new team member
    4. Click Save

    Clear assignment

    1. Click the issue
    2. Click the current assignee
    3. Click Clear or select Unassigned
    4. Click Save

    View issues assigned to you

    You see only issues assigned to you

    On the Backlog or Board, click Filter

    Under Assignee, select your name

  • Create a workspace and project

    A workspace is your Forest instance. A project is where your team manages work.

    Create a workspace

    Your workspace is created when you sign up for Forest. You can have one workspace per account.

    To access your workspace:

    1. Go to forest.tools
    2. Sign in with your email or Google account
    3. You’re in your workspace

    Create a project

    Projects are where work happens. You can create multiple projects within your workspace.

    1. In your workspace, click Projects in the left sidebar
    2. Click Create project or + New Project
    3. Enter a Project Name (for example, Q3 2026 Roadmap)
    4. Enter a Project Key — a 2–4 character code used in issue IDs (for example, Q3 for Q3 Roadmap)
      • The key appears in all issue IDs: Q3-1, Q3-42, etc.
      • You cannot change the key after creation
    5. Click Create

    Your project is now created. You can begin adding team members and configuring settings.

    Set up your project’s fundamental configuration.

    Access project settings

    1. Go to your project
    2. Click Settings (gear icon)
    3. The Settings page opens

    Configure project details

    Project name

    1. Find the Project Name field
    2. Edit the name
    3. Click Save

    The project name can be changed anytime.

    Project key

    Your project key cannot be changed after creation. It appears in all issue IDs (PROJ-1, PROJ-42, etc.).

    Configure notification preferences

    1. In Settings, click the Notifications tab
    2. Choose when you want notifications:
      • When you’re mentioned
      • When assigned to an issue
      • When someone comments on your issue
      • Daily digest (optional)
    3. Click Save

    Create and manage teams

    Teams organize people by discipline or function.

    1. In Settings, click the Teams tab
    2. Click + New Team
    3. Enter a team name (e.g., Frontend, Design, QA)
    4. Add members and set their time allocation
    5. Click Save

  • Invite and manage team members

    Add people to your project and manage their access.

    Invite a team member

    1. Go to Settings (gear icon)
    2. Click the Team tab
    3. Click + Invite Member
    4. Enter their email address
    5. Select their initial role:
      • Admin — Can change settings and manage the project
      • Member — Can create and edit issues
      • Viewer — Can view content (read-only)
    6. Click Send Invite

    The person receives an email with a link to accept. If they already have a Forest account, they’re added immediately.

    Manage team members

    View all team members

    In Settings > Team, you see all members and their roles.

    Change a member’s role

    1. Find the member in the list
    2. Click the role dropdown next to their name
    3. Select a new role
    4. Click Save

    The change takes effect immediately.

    Remove a member

    1. Find the member in the list
    2. Click the delete icon (trash)
    3. Click Confirm

    They lose access to the project. Historical issues remain assigned to them.

  • Understand user roles and permissions

    Forest uses a 3-tier role system: Platform, Company, and Project levels.

    Project roles control what users can do within a specific project.

    Project Admin

    Can perform all actions:

    • Create, edit, and delete issues
    • Modify project settings
    • Invite and remove members
    • Create and manage teams
    • View all reports
    • Delete the project

    Team Admin

    Can manage their assigned team(s):

    • Create, edit, and delete issues in their team
    • Manage team members in their team
    • Edit team capacity
    • Cannot access other teams
    • Cannot modify project settings

    Member

    Can perform core work activities:

    • Create and edit issues
    • Update issue status
    • Comment and collaborate
    • View capacity and budget data
    • Assign issues to themselves
    • Cannot delete issues
    • Cannot invite members

    Viewer

    Can view content only:

    Cannot create, edit, or delete anything

    View all issues and boards

    View timelines and reports

    View comments
