  • Auto-calculated vs manual metrics

Metrics can be auto-calculated from your work, or updated manually.

    Auto-calculated metrics

These metrics update automatically based on linked issues:

    • Issue count — Recounts linked issues every time you view it
    • Issue estimation — Sums story points of linked issues
    • Issue completion — Recalculates % of issues marked done
    • Custom field — Aggregates custom field values from linked issues

No manual update needed. As you close issues and update fields, these metrics refresh automatically.

    When auto-calculated metrics update

    Auto-calculated metrics update:

    • When you link or unlink an issue
    • When you change an issue’s status (marks it done/not done)
    • When you change an issue’s estimate
    • When you modify relevant custom field values

    Example: Issue completion metric

    1. You create an “Onboarding redesign” objective with 10 linked issues
    2. You set a metric: Issue completion, target 100%
    3. As your team marks issues done, the % updates automatically
    4. When 10/10 are done, the metric shows 100%

    Manual metrics

Manual metrics are tracked outside of issues. You update them by hand.

    When to use manual metrics

    Use manual metrics for:

    • NPS scores — Customer satisfaction surveys
    • Market share — Competitive positioning
    • Revenue — Financial targets
    • Adoption rate — Feature or product usage
    • Team velocity — Story points per sprint

    Example: NPS metric

    1. You create a “Customer satisfaction” objective
    2. You add a metric: Manual NPS, target 75
    3. Each quarter, you survey customers and update the current value
    4. The metric shows progress toward 75

    Mix auto-calculated and manual

You can use both on the same objective:

    • Auto-calculated: “Issue completion: 60/100 issues done”
    • Manual: “NPS score: 72 (target 75)”

    Metric rollup

    When calculating objective progress:

    • Objective metrics roll up from all linked issues
    • Theme metrics are specific to that theme’s issues

    See Progress tracking and rollup.

  • Set up themes and initiatives

Themes are work streams within an objective. They break down strategic goals into smaller initiatives.

    Create a theme

    1. In the Planning page, click an Objective
    2. Click + New Theme or Add Theme
    3. Enter:
      • Name — Your theme (e.g., “User onboarding flow”)
      • Description (optional) — What this theme covers
    4. Click Create

The theme is now part of the objective and appears in the Planning interface.

    Company-wide vs. discipline-scoped themes

By default, themes are company-wide and visible to all project members.

To make a theme discipline-specific, see Discipline-scoped themes.

    Add theme metrics

Metrics on themes track the work progress.

    1. Click a theme to open its panel
    2. Click the Metrics tab
    3. Click + Add Metric

    Edit or delete a theme

    1. Click the theme
    2. To edit: modify fields and click Save
    3. To delete: click Delete and confirm

  • Company-wide strategic planning

Strategic planning connects all levels of your organization—from daily work to company goals.

    View the strategic planning hierarchy

    1. Go to Planning

    The hierarchy is:

    • Objective (top level, e.g., “Improve customer retention”)
      • Theme (mid level, e.g., “Loyalty program redesign”)
        • Issue (individual work, e.g., “Design loyalty tier structure”)

    Plan top-down

    1. Create company Objectives representing long-term goals
    2. Break each objective into Themes (work streams)
    3. Link existing Issues to themes, or create new issues within themes

This ensures all work ladders up to strategy.

    Track progress

Metrics on objectives and themes auto-calculate:

    • Issue count — How many issues are linked
    • Completion % — What % of linked issues are marked done
    • Story points — Sum of estimates on linked issues

    • Manual metrics — Goals you set and update manually

    See Define and track metrics.

    Report on strategy

    1. Go to Planning
    2. View objective cards showing:
      • Progress bars (metric completion)
      • Linked issue counts
      • Theme breakdown

This gives you a “strategy dashboard” showing execution progress.

    Involve the whole company

Discipline leaders manage parallel discipline-scoped strategic initiatives

    Executives create and maintain objectives

Team leads organize issues into themes

Individual contributors link their daily work to themes

  • View and manage timeline

The timeline shows work on a Gantt-style chart, ideal for planning roadmaps and dependencies.

    Access the timeline

    1. Go to your project
    2. Click the Timeline tab

The timeline displays issues as bars on a horizontal calendar spanning days, weeks, or months.

    Understand the timeline view

Horizontal axis shows time (today, weeks, months).

Vertical axis lists issues, grouped by team or status.

Bars represent issue duration from start to end date.

Colors indicate status (backlog = gray, in progress = blue, done = green).

    Set issue dates

    1. Click an issue on the timeline
    2. Enter Start Date
    3. Enter Due Date or End Date
    4. Click Save

The issue bar on the timeline updates to reflect the dates.

    View by team

    1. Click Group by or View
    2. Select Team

Issues organize horizontally by team, making it easy to see team capacity over time.

    Scroll and zoom

    1. Use your mouse wheel to scroll left/right on the timeline
    2. Use the + and  buttons (or pinch gesture) to zoom in or out

Zoom out to see the full roadmap; zoom in for details.

    Filter the timeline

The timeline updates to show only matching issues

    Click Filters

    Select StatusTeamAssignee, or Priority

  • Team grouping and dependencies

Visualize team schedules and identify blockers.

    Group by team

    1. Click Group by on the Timeline
    2. Select Team

Issues are now organized by team, with each team’s workload visible across time.

    This helps you:

    • See if one team is overloaded
    • Identify parallel vs. sequential work
    • Spot timing mismatches between teams

    Identify dependencies

Issues linked to other issues (via a “blocks” or “depends on” relationship) may show visual indicators on the timeline.

    1. Look for lines or badges connecting related issues
    2. Click an issue to see its dependencies in the detail panel

    Reorder issues within a team

Issues within a team can be reordered on the timeline by dragging. See Reorder and plan sequentially.

    Unassigned issues

Issues without a team assignment appear in a separate section at the top or bottom.

Assign issues to teams to include them in team groupings.

  • Reorder and plan sequentially

Organize your timeline to show the work sequence and identify critical paths.

    Reorder issues on the timeline

    1. On the Timeline, locate an issue row
    2. Drag the row up or down
    3. Release the mouse

The issue position updates, and the timeline reflects the new order.

    Use positioning to represent sequence

While the timeline’s horizontal position (dates) represents when work happens, the vertical position represents priority or sequence within a phase.

Drag higher-priority or earlier issues toward the top.

    Plan sequential releases

    1. Set Start Date and Due Date for each issue
    2. Arrange issues so that dependencies complete before dependents begin
    3. Use the timeline to visually confirm the sequence

    For example:

    • “Backend API” (Week 1–2)
    • “Frontend integration” (Week 3–4) — depends on backend
    • “Testing & QA” (Week 4–5) — depends on both

    Set realistic timelines

    When planning sequences:

    1. Avoid overlapping deadlines for dependent work
    2. Leave buffer time for testing and fixes
    3. Account for team capacity and other commitments

    Export or share timeline

Many teams take screenshots of the timeline for presentations or reports. The timeline visualization helps stakeholders understand the roadmap.

  • Organize and prioritize backlog

The backlog is your prioritized list of all work, from high-priority to low.

    Access the backlog

    1. Go to your project
    2. Click the Backlog tab

The backlog shows all issues not yet started, sorted by priority.

    Reorder issues to set priority

    1. Drag an issue up or down in the list
    2. Release the mouse

The issue position updates. Higher position = higher priority.

    Understand backlog status

Issues in the backlog have a status of “Backlog” or “Not Started”. They appear here until moved to “In Progress” or another active status.

    Group the backlog

    1. Click Group by or View
    2. Select TeamPriority, or Assignee
    3. Issues organize into groups

    This helps you:

    • See what each team needs to do
    • Identify priority clusters
    • Spot unbalanced workload

    Remove grouping

    1. Click Group by
    2. Select No grouping or Flat view

The backlog returns to a flat, prioritized list.
